UvA research project: information letter

Relation between sports participation and academic performance

The study

The goal of this study is to analyze how sports participation impacts academic performance. We will investigate how factors such as the frequency, type, and intensity of sports practiced relates to academic performance and progress. To achieve this, data will be collected regarding sports participation at USC and academic achievements recorded by either the University of Amsterdam (UvA) or the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences (Hogeschool van Amsterdam; (HvA). We are including data of students who are currently pursuing a bachelor’s or master’s degree or have graduated or discontinued their studies within the last year.

On this page you find all information about the study and the linkage of your data from USC and either the UvA or HvA. You agree to USC sharing your data with the UvA in My USC.

Please note that (regular) participation in sports at USC is not a prerequisite for participation in the study.

Who will conduct this study?

The study will be conducted by the Fit Brain Lab, under supervision of Dr. Joram Mul. The Fit Brain Lab is part of the research group ‘Structural and Functional Plasticity of the Nervous System’ led by Prof. Paul Lucassen and is part of the Swammerdam Institute for Life Sciences within the Faculty of Science (FNWI) of the University of Amsterdam.

Which data will be collected?

USC will share the following data with the education service desk of the FNWI (FNWI-ESC) of the UvA:

  • Information about your membership: start date of your USC membership, duration of your current membership, and the type of membership you have/used to have at USC
  • Visit details: the date, time of entry, location and registered type of class/sport for each visit to USC, and any instances of no-show

These data will then be linked to information from the UvA/HvA from SIS:

  • Gender
  • Academic information: start date at the UvA/HvA, what program are you enrolled in, and in which academic year are you currently
  • Data regarding your academic performance: your total earned credit points (EC) and your grades per course, along with the date on which each grade was achieved

The following information of USC and UvA or HvA will be used to link the data. This information will not be used in the analyses of the study (see next paragraph).

  • First and last name
  • Date of birth
  • UvAnetID or HvAnetID

How will the data be processed?

Your data will be shared by USC with the FNWI-ESC. There, USC related data will be linked to UvA/HvA data with the use of your UvAnetID/HvAnetID, first and last name and date of birth. After linkage, the data will be pseudonymized, meaning the research team cannot trace the data back to you; the birth date will be converted to age in years and months, and other details such as name and student number will not be disclosed. Data will be processed anonymously for data analysis and any potential publications.

How long will data be stored?

Your data will be deleted upon withdrawal of your consent or after a maximum period of 10 years following publication. USC data will solely be linked to information available to the UvA/HvA.
