Ramadan at USC
The last week of Ramadan has started! Many members of USC actively participate in fasting during the holy month of the Islamic calendar. Abdel too. We asked him how he experiences Ramadan through a sports perspective at USC.
Could you briefly introduce yourself?
“My name is Abdel, I am 24 years old, and I am currently studying Notarial Law at the Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam. In addition to my studies, I train 5 to 7 times a week at USC ClubWest, which is also one of my favorite places to study.”
What does Ramadan mean to you?
“Ramadan is (for me) the month of worship and a way to purify the soul. It is a chance to improve yourself, in which discipline, endurance and self-control are key.”
In what ways do you take Ramadan into account when working out?
“Because of the fasting, I have adjusted my training schedule. I now only train after the last prayer during the week. While I can normally be found at ClubWest in the afternoon.”
What effect does doing sports at USC have on your Ramadan experience?
“At ClubWest, many Muslims and others who participate in Ramadan work out. During this period, I have often had conversations about faith and fasting with the people who train here. The feeling of solidarity is therefore very strong. Exchanging tips and sharing experiences with each other gives me strength and motivation.”
Have you considered not working out during Ramadan? And what were your considerations?
“It was clear to me early on that I wanted to continue training during Ramadan. It was just important that practicing my faith would not be hindered in any way by my training schedule.”
What is your favorite snack if the sun goes down on a day on which you had a workout at USC?
“My go-to snack after a training during Ramadan is a nice protein bar.”
And finally: what kind of workout are you going to treat yourself to when Ramadan is over?
“After Ramadan I will treat myself to a nice and intense calisthenics workout!”
